Keeping the lights on in a down economy

One of the questions I get on a daily basis is "How is the economy affecting Bulletproof?"   I get asked it so much that I thought I'd take a few minutes to give you my thoughts on this crazy world we live in.   First off, Atlantic Canada is never in a huge boom, nor a huge downturn, it's always around the middle so a recession to us never seems be as bad as some other parts of the world.

This past week I had the opportunity to take part in a US/Canadian trade mission held in Boston and it was quite obvious in speaking with representatives from many companies that they are feeling the pinch considerably more than us in Atlantic Canada.  Don't get me wrong, I realize many industries in our neck of the woods have been affected substantially but I truly believe this is not the norm.

All things to all people - NOT !

Just shy of 60 IT experts Bulletproof Solutions Inc. has managed to develop an excellent reputation based on its people and their professionalism.  When the company first started we mainly focused on the Security side of things but after a few years it became apparent we were coming to a cross road within our company and the market in Atlantic Canada.

The security market in Atlantic Canada had been saturated with IT companies claiming they were security focused and had all the answers, meaning we were just another option.   After working very hard for three years to solidify our brand, you can just imagine how we felt when the market seemed to turn.

Security Focused or Not?

When we were starting Bulletproof in 2001 the big question was: "What are we going to do?"    The biggest concern we had was not becoming just another IT company or just another "all things to all people".  There was a lot of this in the market at the time and we felt we needed to be a niche player.  In this post, I'll share with you how the decision was made to focus on security.

In the initial discussions around what we would become, the two technical members of the team, Andrew Jefferies and Jeff Shaw felt that the IT industry was pushing towards a focus on increased security. Several major corporate attacks on the web had hit the news in recent years and a general increase in security awareness all pointed to a coming demand for these services. The decision was made and  we do a lot of other things, every one of them has a security and network component to it.

One of the things I get asked a lot is how did Bulletproof Solutions get started?  My next few posts will address these questions and hopefully give you insight as to what makes this machine we call Bulletproof tick.

First off we need to look at where we came from.  In the spring of 1999 two long time friends, Tim Hawkins and Ian Donald approached me about the possibility of starting up an IT company.  Admittedly they knew nothing about IT but were more than willing to learn.  At the time I was working for a local IT company and was having a fair amount of success on the sales front despite knowing very little about sales and more about technology.  In a nutshell I was happy doing what I was doing and didn't feel the timing was right.  How things can change!

Just one year after that in the spring of 2000 in the midst of a .COM bust the company I was working for was sold and things began to change significantly for me and the thoughts of doing  this ourselves resurfaced and in May of 2001we started Bulletproof Solutions Inc.
