Security Focused or Not?

When we were starting Bulletproof in 2001 the big question was: "What are we going to do?"    The biggest concern we had was not becoming just another IT company or just another "all things to all people".  There was a lot of this in the market at the time and we felt we needed to be a niche player.  In this post, I'll share with you how the decision was made to focus on security.

In the initial discussions around what we would become, the two technical members of the team, Andrew Jefferies and Jeff Shaw felt that the IT industry was pushing towards a focus on increased security. Several major corporate attacks on the web had hit the news in recent years and a general increase in security awareness all pointed to a coming demand for these services. The decision was made and  we do a lot of other things, every one of them has a security and network component to it.

Just a few short months after we took the plunge, the world was faced with one of the most terrible tragedies it had ever seen: 9/11. Sept 11, 2001 was a terrible day in so many ways but ended up being a key turning point for our business.  It created an immediate need for businesses to starting thinking more about securing their data and their businesses as a whole.  Every CEO from the Fortune 500 to that 25 person local company, was now thinking about security and what kind of an effect it could have on their business

With the surge in interest in the marketplace, came competition within Atlantic Canada.  Just months after 9/11 every IT company in the region proclaimed to be a security expert or at the very least, have a "security focused" team within their organization.    We rose to the challenge and became the regions premier provider for security and network services.

I have always said that to be successful in business you have to get a break or two, this was our  first.  Eight years later it's our experts within the company that have made the difference.  Their dedication to professionalism and commitment to our customers has been the one thing that has given us the reputation that we have today and allowed us to grow continually.

In my next post I'll discuss what the company looks like today and elaborate on our five lines of business.
