As the world changes - FAST !

It never ceases to amaze me how fast our world is changing every day.  One of the stories I often tell which really enforces this is one I heard recently at a Cisco Velocity conference in Paris.  During one of the theatre sessions at the end of the conference we were discussing this very topic and the facilitator of the session gave a real life example to the group.

IP Video Surveillance 101

With Bulletproof becoming the only company in Canada certified to sell and implement CISCO's IP Video Surveillance (IPVS) solution the demand and interest has been very steady.  With each engagement that we undertake I see the same types of questions being asked over and over.  In light of this I put together a sales questionnaire for our sales team.  In this post I have extracted the customer relevant questions to assist you in preparing for an IPVS implementation.

First off I must say I have been poor on the blogging side of things as of late.  All it takes is a conference on Sales and Marketing and Social Media to get you back in the swing of things.  As I write this I am on an 8 hour plane ride back from Paris where CISCO recently held their Partner Velocity conference.   I have attended this event for the past three years and in my opinion it is the most valuable event that I attend annually.

One of the customer experiences I often tell is that of one of our long time customers, Cooke Aquaculture. When I tell someone how IT positively impacted Cooke's business, the person at the other end of the conversation undoubtedly says "Wow that is so cool!" Let's see what you think.

Call your customer

One of the things I feel most strongly about is communicating with our customers and one of the really important aspects of this is soon after a project is complete. As consultants we tend to knock em' down and move onto the next challenge. As much as this approach is engrained into the psyche of a consultant I honestly feel it's the wrong approach.

First in Canada !

This past week, Bulletproof Solutions was officially named the first company in Canada to be certified in the CISCO's Advanced Technology Program for IP Video Surveillance.  I can't begin to explain the amount of effort and investment it took to bring this to fruition.  Several months of training and lab work including the development of a two hundred thousand dollar state of the art technology lab was all part of it.

You might ask, "Why did we do it?"  For several reasons actually but the biggest reason is that we had the ability to become the first company in Canada to be certified in a technology that will have a worldwide market of over 46 billion dollars annually by 2013.

Any time a business is started, it most certainly needs to differentiate itself in at least one way.  Many people believe they differentiate on any combination of price, customer service or being on time and on budget.  In reality these are what we call the "antes" like that of a poker game, they are expected.  A real differentiator is something that is above and beyond the norm and not expected.  For Bulletproof Solutions it has always been the security and process focus we have in everything we do and the accessibility at every level including me as the CEO.

It doesn't matter if we are doing a small install for a local company or a massive implementation for a publicly traded company, we always take the time to do it right from a process perspective and we always have security as the first priority.

Keeping the lights on in a down economy

One of the questions I get on a daily basis is "How is the economy affecting Bulletproof?"   I get asked it so much that I thought I'd take a few minutes to give you my thoughts on this crazy world we live in.   First off, Atlantic Canada is never in a huge boom, nor a huge downturn, it's always around the middle so a recession to us never seems be as bad as some other parts of the world.

This past week I had the opportunity to take part in a US/Canadian trade mission held in Boston and it was quite obvious in speaking with representatives from many companies that they are feeling the pinch considerably more than us in Atlantic Canada.  Don't get me wrong, I realize many industries in our neck of the woods have been affected substantially but I truly believe this is not the norm.

All things to all people - NOT !

Just shy of 60 IT experts Bulletproof Solutions Inc. has managed to develop an excellent reputation based on its people and their professionalism.  When the company first started we mainly focused on the Security side of things but after a few years it became apparent we were coming to a cross road within our company and the market in Atlantic Canada.

The security market in Atlantic Canada had been saturated with IT companies claiming they were security focused and had all the answers, meaning we were just another option.   After working very hard for three years to solidify our brand, you can just imagine how we felt when the market seemed to turn.

Security Focused or Not?

When we were starting Bulletproof in 2001 the big question was: "What are we going to do?"    The biggest concern we had was not becoming just another IT company or just another "all things to all people".  There was a lot of this in the market at the time and we felt we needed to be a niche player.  In this post, I'll share with you how the decision was made to focus on security.

In the initial discussions around what we would become, the two technical members of the team, Andrew Jefferies and Jeff Shaw felt that the IT industry was pushing towards a focus on increased security. Several major corporate attacks on the web had hit the news in recent years and a general increase in security awareness all pointed to a coming demand for these services. The decision was made and  we do a lot of other things, every one of them has a security and network component to it.
