A security guy doing social media?!?

Bulletproof is currently doing a a big push to embrace social media and allow our customers to get more intimately involved with our company through direct interaction.

As a security guy, social media is scary. So, why would I choose to join the social media team and push this forward? The first reason is simple, the move to social media is going to happen to all of us,  regardless. The second reason is because I think we're doing all of the right things to use the technology responsibly.

The first thing that we did as part of this initiative was to develop Corporate Social Media Policy. This policy (written by Josh @bulletproof_jb)  spells out what types of information are appropriate to share, and more importantly, what types of information are not.  By having these parameters well defined we have taken a chaotic technology and brought some order into the equation.

Some of the specific points that are addressed in our policy are:

  • The type of content we want to post.
  • The types of media that we will use.
  • The requirement for self control and personal responsibility.
  • An overview of the risks and ways to avoid them.
  • Specific protections around customer and proprietary protection.

This isn't a huge tome of a document, it is a quick 2 pager that highlights the required information.

The other thing that we are doing is addressing specifically how people will access the technology. We are focusing on consistent (and proven) applications and services.  This helps to ensure that our social media team are using safe applications and services.

The best thing that this initiative has done is get our people talking about the issues and on the same page as far as solutions.

I look forward to sharing more thoughts on this throughout and as part of this endeavor. If you have any thoughts on security and social media, please post them below or even better ...
